He ended on a scream, turned his back to the audience, and fell backward like a dead man. The band continued their brutal rhythm, and Los and Jordan carried the vocals as Silas lay still as a corpse being passed over thousands of fans. Not once did they let him dip down. Not once did even a foot leave a hand. And then he was back in the arms of security. They lifted him over the barrier, and he ran around to the steps to climb back onto the stage in time to sing the last chorus and end the song.

The crowd went insane. Krish was knocked around by people trying to get closer, even though he stood at the back. He didn’t know how to feel in that moment. Thrilled to see Silas being loved by his fans? Angry that he’d put himself in harm’s way like that? Or ashamed that he may have had something to do with Silas’s erratic behavior?

“That was wild.”

Jake stood next to him, looking incredibly un-Jake-like.

“What happened to you?”

Jake looked down at himself as though he hadn’t noticed he was dressed like one of the guys in the band, only way fucking sexier. He wore a black New Year’s Day tee, sliced and diced to show off bits of his pasty white torso. Someone had done a complete makeup job on him, enhancing his already handsome appearance. The results were striking. His hair was stylishly tousled with some sort of glitter product, and the front stood about four inches off his head. Krish was stunned silent.

“I let Roxanne and Jessica play. Jordan was all pissy about something and took off. The rest of the band was brooding, so I let the girls have fun. What do you think?”

“I think you look hot. I think your brother would flip the fuck out if he saw you.”

“Let him. He’s not my keeper.” Jake looked him over and frowned.

“What happened this morning?”

Krish sighed. “I have an interview with Alt-Scene on Monday in San Francisco. And I told Silas the truth.”

Jake turned to face him and rested his hands on Krish’s arms. “Tell me he didn’t freak.”

“He didn’t freak. He… left. Said ‘see you around.’”

Jake frowned. “That’s it?”

“That’s it. Listen, I’m trying to find a way to the city and a hotel…. Can you get home okay on your own?”

Jake’s eyes bugged out. “You mean you’re going to leave? You can’t leave like this. You have to say something.”

“What’s there to say? I fucked up. I should have told him who I was, and I didn’t. I had plenty of opportunities.”

“But you guys are…. You can’t…. Krish, I need you to have a happy ending. One of us needs some romance.”

“Well, I guess it’ll have to be you.” Krish smiled sadly. “You look ready for it. I’ll be okay. I didn’t mean to hurt him. He means so much to me.”

Krish’s eyes burned, and he needed to get out of there. He ran his hands through his hair. “I’m going to go back to the bus, and, I don’t know.
